Pencil Jam Assignment – Draw like Degas

So! you couldn’t wait for the weekend to draw, huh?. Well, good for you! Here’s our first Pencil Jam assignment and it’s on gesture drawing. Our teacher will be the legendary Edgar Degas.
However, before we get into the assignment, i’m going to first just explain what’s going on here.
Why an assignment.
Drawing is sublime yes, but more importantly drawing is fun, especially when you’re drawing as a part of a group. Our Pencil Jams happen just once a week (every weekend) and that’s perhaps not …

Big bad scary drawing.

Drawing is really darned scary for so many people. “I can’t draw.” “Did you draw that with your own hand?” (Yes, who else’s!) “Eeee… these are really bad drawings. Don’t look at them.” “I don’t draw because I don’t know how.” “I am a graphic designer so I don’t have to draw.” “My left toe hurts so I can’t draw.” The list of excuses is endless. I emptied mine out and here’s what I’ve found. Pencil scrapings, eraser dust, scraps of hair and other unmentionables not included.

The Box has evolved. It really has. I picked it up  at Primary Art Supply, Savannah, GA (the absolute HUB of art supply (I won’t call it stationery. There’s a difference!) for us in art school at SCAD. I’ve never seen an awesomer, more well organised store. It has EVERYTHING. Drop by there sometime and see for yourself.)
The Box was then pristine, clean and smelt of freshly scraped balsa wood. …

Go-Ju is a Japanese term, meaning Hard and Soft. I think it originated from the term Go-ju ryu, meaning hard-soft style in karate, a Japanese martial art form. The concept of hard and soft refers to a system of yielding and pressing forward, a sort of push and pull if you will. The system recognises that in an engagement, the opponent uses force as well and this force can also be used alongside one’s own force of attack. You can see this more readily in martial art forms such as …

English is sometimes a funny language. The word drawing is misleading. People associate drawing to drawings, but the first word refers to the process and the other is an end result. It’s like the word – building. Wouldn’t you rather just call it Built or Builts? Like a Drawn or Drawns? See?
